She felt all the old love and longing come back and her emotions were real. After she rings the police and they arrive, she acts like the devoted loving wife she was at the start. Mrs. Maloney acts smart and sophisticated style towards the end of the story. Knowing that the officers would be hungry she offers the lamb to them. She knew that they wouldnt refuse as her husband were good friends with them. Good friends of dear Patrick. Right at the end of the story Mary Maloney giggles to herself knowing that she got away with what shes done and will never get caught. When the young man and woman come and sit with the men, things started to get peculiar. Carlos asks for a light, as the young man comments on his lighter, its as if Carlos saw this as an opportunity to turn nothing into something. You say dis famous lighter it never fails. Iss dat what you say? The reader asks why Carlos is so obsessed with the lighter. As soon as the man seems interested he put his car up as the bait, and asks the man for his finger if he loses. Why not? You win, you take de car. You lose, I take de finger. He says this as if it is normal and gets the reader thinking and keen to find out how this scenario will be played out. When the young man agrees to the bet, Carlos organises everything as if hes done it before like a childs game. As soon as they start the bet, everyone feels uneasy and they start counting down. Three! Four! Five! Six! Roald Dahl uses these short sentences for the suspense. As they counted 8 a woman comes in, probably his wife. She then realises whats going on and starts shaking him as a mother would to a child. She then apologises to everyone and they realises there thought was right, he had done this before. I come back and he is at it again. She then explains the reason why they were in Jamaica and what hes done. She knows his ways and guessed right that he bet a car. At this point the readers are thinking how she knows this. Towards the end she explains that she herself was one of his victims. As a matter of fact I myself won it all from him a long while ago. Conclusion The man from the south is more unusual than Mary Maloney in land for slaughter. This is because at the start of the story it seems normal and set in a realistic place. It only starts to get weird after they make the bet Carlos asks for his fingers if he loses. The story is better than Lamb For Slaughter because its written in first person, it makes the reader seems they are in the story. Roald Dahl makes the story more exciting by counting down the time the man flicked the lighter. The end of the story makes it more unusual because the reader would never expect his wife to one of his victims, losing three fingers. What do you find most striking about the poem Kubla Khan?†Works of imagination should be written in very plain language; the more purely imaginative they are the more necessary it is to be plain.† – Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In this essay I am going to discuss one of the most famous and very striking poem Kubla Khan which was written by Coleridge. The poem is about the nature of creativity. Coleridge describes the dome of pleasure which he sees in his dream while he is opium- induced. While he was sick, doctor prescribed a drug that made him drowsy. He could remember only couple of images, which he later developed into a beautiful poem. During his sleep knocking on the door interrupted him, and he could never recapture the dream because he lost the inspiration. This poem is considered to be a fragment but it seems that Kubla Khan is carefully worked using illusions from the works Coleridge was reading at the time. Kubla Khan has slow plodding metre, which is achieved using iambic tetrameter that consists of 8 syllables. This is where the musicality comes from. The poet uses this in order that we could imagine more clearly the pleasure dome in the dream like surrounding. Each stanza differs a little bit in rhyme scheme. First stanza is written in iambic tetrameter with a rhyme scheme of ABAABCCDEDE, whereas second stanza follows the rhyming pattern, which is expanded ABAABCCDDFFGGHIIHJJ. The third stanza has shorter rhyme scheme of ABABCC. The fourth stanza continues the tetrameter of the third stanza and rhymes ABCCBDEDEFGFFFGHHG. This kind of rhyme scheme represents the flow of river ‘Alph’ which symbolises Colereidges imagination. The poem Kubla Khan starts with first five lines that sound like chant. The quote: caverns measureless to man suggest that the place is very supernatural and mysterious. In this line Coleridge tells us that imagination has no restrictions. Coleridge describes not only mental part of the creativity but also physical one: And there were gardens brights with sinious rills, /Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree . These two lines show us that senses such as smell are awakened by the imagination.  Coleridge also uses colours to give increased impact: Down the green hill athwart a cendarn cover!, these lines help us see very strikingly vivid image. However the peacefulness changes in the second stanza, which creates an atmosphere of good versus evil. In the first stanza Coleridge describes, pleasure dome in Xanadu, where we see more positive vocabulary gardens brightspots of greenery, whereas second stanza contain more dark vocabulary A savage placemoon was haunteddemon lover. Coleridge uses images of paradise in the second stanza, which is considered to be more evil. An example of this is the demon lover that has bewitched the woman. The second stanza tends to be more magical than the first one: use of words holy and enchanted associates with dome being haunted by mystical powers. When Coleridge describes the women wailing using onomatopoeia, it awakens the sense of hearing, making the process more physical. As the poem progresses so does the amount of intensity and activity. And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,/As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,/A mighty fountain momently was forced:. The level of excitement increases dramatically, by involving more and more emotions such as confusion and anger. Coleridge introduces personification when describing earth which tell us that not only the poet is affected by intensity but also elements around him. When poem reaches climax which in this poem appears to be fountain, Coleridge spills all of his feeling and thoughts to the surface. To make the image more clear the climax is prolonged: Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,/Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher s flail:And mid these dancing rocks at once and ever/ It flung up momently the sacred river. Coleridge explains how the imagination made rock, fragments and grain active. Huge boulders being moved by a river seems to be very light or even weightless . This makes us to be aware that the imagination of poet is uncontrollable. When the poem is saturated with climax, the excitement and enthusiasm decreases. Five miles meandering with a mazy motion/Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,/Then reached the caverns measureless to man,/And sank  in tumult to a lifeless ocean: The tempo decreases, and the mood changes as-well. Coleridge carefully chooses words: meandering, mazy and sank that makes the rhythm slower losing its life and recreation. This happens because before and during climax poet got very tired because his imagination was physically and mentally demanding. Therefore, the second part of the poem represents exhausted behavior of Coleridge. The clause: prophesying war shows the negative side of the poem, where pleasure dome may be affected by war. Coleridge again describes the pleasure dome but in negative way: A sunny pleasure dome with caves of ice connoting that its magicality is tarnished and no-one can see and feel that place like him. The fourth stanza is dream like but very inspiring describing heavenly maid sitar – dulcimer playing damsel about Mount Abora, the mountain of Gods. The damsel acts like a muse for Coleridge: Could I revive with me/ Her symphony and song,/ To such delight t would win me. Poet cannot pass even the most inspiring image to us the way he could feel himself so he tries to explain how he felt about it saying: I would build that dome in air,/ That sunny dome! Those caves of ice!. Even the caves have been negative aspect of the poem, Coleridge still tries to make us undergo the same experience even if it is negative. The last part of the poem is very magnificent and awe inspiring. The poem end with poets predication of destiny: All shouldholy dread. Coleridge thinks that his powerful imagination may be not understood and fully appreciated. The last few lines are very pleasant and nice: For he on..paradise. Romantics in the past were viewed as very peculiar human being because they could get in touch with their emotions very closely. Kubla Khan describes process of creativity which Coleridge inspires though his imagination. The process is very powerful mentally and physically. Poet uses very clever techniques such onomatopoeia, metaphors, alliteration to emphasize the process of creativity. The third and fourth stanza slows down in tempo but has some very inspiring imagery, which Coleridge finds hard to pass to us. In Richard the third, there are many different female characters that are put in contrast to men. The audience is aware of their presence and effect on the men in the play. In this essay the four main female characters will have a character analysis and viewing scenes when women overcome men or either the men make them look vulnerable. The traditional view of men was that they were Dominant, strong, brave, owner and Lord of all that he possessed. The traditional view of women was the object of possession, weak, obedient and homely. They were taught to stay at home, cook for the husband and bring up the children, also to generally do everything in her power to look beautiful for her husband. Men were expected to go out and work, to bring in money to bring up his family, to treat his wife as he saw fit and to be the master of the house. Shakespeare’s time is actually different to Richard the thirds time, however the view on women is still the same. However, ironically some of the strongest monarchs that England has seen have been women. This shows that although times change, women can still prove to be just as strong as the men. Such as, Bodica who lead her Viking troops into war and defeated the Romans many times. Elizabeth the first was also a very strong monarch in Shakespeare’s time. That time was a patriarchal society, so men, who could influence the characters in Richard the third, dominated it. Women are seen as the victims. She is disgraced and Claudio will not marry her. In order to prove her innocence, she has to deceive all of her household until her innocence is found when she can truly step back into society. However, a very strong character is shown in the same play. Beatrice is a strong minded, outspoken and somewhat swaggering. Especially in her responses when Benedict challenges her, a male character that mirrors her perfectly. If the play were not set in such a loving family environment, she would not be accepted as an honorable wife or possession. How the story ends is her strong character is just a front, and she loses it when she falls in love with her reflective character, as she does not feel threatened anymore. In Richard the third, there are many female characters that reflect Shakespeare’s views on females. The first character analysis is of Lady Anne: She is a woman in control and shows this in the first sexual scene when Richard seduces her. She is shown up at first as weak. She is walking behind the coffin of her dead father; this shows that the strong male in her life is no longer there to support her. She is also in mourning and very vulnerable as she could be bewildered about her emotions. Richard knows this and so he makes sure it is used to his advantage. These are insults thrown at Richard to make it seem like she does not care for his compliments and this male character will not knock her down. However, Richard always replies with a compliment in order to woe her and targets her vanity. A stage direction is important as every direction directs the character and creates a personality and what actions to proceed with. They give every character guidance and how the play is set up. The stage directions give the actor more insight into the character theyre playing and how to portray them to the audience. During this specific stage direction we are told, The inspector needs not to be a big man but he creates at once an impression of massiveness, solidity and purposefulness. Priestley includes this to tell us about the inspectors personality, temper and attitude. It tells us that the character will constantly be taking charge and will be determined to do anything to receive any information necessary. Soon after, Edna introduces the inspector and explains that his name is Inspector Goole. Priestleys technique of using this name signifies to us that Goole sounds like Ghoul a spirit who has a morbid interest in death, a spirit that is said to take fresh life from corpse. Its like this characters existence is due to Eva Smiths death. Priestley also makes us explore even deeper into the situation. Goole is also a small fishing town and this suggests that he is about to fish for information and take as long as it needs which we soon recognise in his methodical line of inquiry. These words states that the inspector grows and remains solid while each of the other characters breaks down as he is becoming more successful. These words tell us that the inspector is here to act as a conscience and take no nonsense and constantly keep taking charge of the conversation. These words give an impression of someone who is both an outsider and omniscient. This makes him appear more mysterious and powerful. Priestley also gives the inspector the ability to unnerve people before he speaks. The inspector makes things happen and allows secrets to be revealed. He controls everyone and their actions. Before he speaks he strongly looks at his victim, letting them know that he is here for a reason and he will break anything that they maybe trying to build. Priestley gives the inspector the power to fish out anything that is required. The stares of his eyes, lets the other characters know that this isnt a man to be contradicted. By the stare of his eyes he lets them know that he will eventually get what he wants. I shall now focus on how the inspector has the ability to interrogate each of his suspects and how he has a methodical way of questioning each of the characters and how he has the ability to receive any information he requires from them by using his economical choice of words. Although I have insignificant time to concentrate on all five characters, but however I shall concentrate in two in detail, which are Mrs Birling and Shelia. He interrogates them one by one in order to complete his mission and stop confusion. The first character I will focus on will be Mrs Birling. As she enters the room she enters briskly and self-confidently, as if she is not going to be broken down. But as she is shown the picture of the girl the inspector straight away realises that the picture has been recognised. Its an organisation to which women in distress can appeal for help in various forms. Isnt that so? At this particular point there was no wealth fare state and so people turned to charities and organisations for help. This is one of the questions that begin to break down Mrs Birling, which she fails to realise. Priestley is getting his own political views across and criticising the government for failing to provide for the less fortunate members of society. Afterwards the inspector asks questions that begin to frustrate and put Mrs Birling under pressure so from this he receives the information by his economical use of questions. As time moves forwards the inspector keeps his victims case under control and massively takes charge as he is constantly being interrupted which tells this family that they will all gain the equal amount of respect no matter who the characters are. At Eva Smiths death we get a glimpse at society at the time through each of the characters. Through the inspector and as Mrs Birling is one of his suspects he is attempting to show his attitude towards human morality and responsibility. He is teaching the audience an important point about society and the different generations attitude towards it. Priestley wanted to express the fact that everybody has a responsibility but some dont face up to it as shown through Mrs Birling. As the inspector, Priestley was trying to show the differences between the older generation and the younger generation. Through Mrs Birling he tells us how she thinks she is more superior to others, a girl of that class, she only had herself to blame. These quotes tell us that Priestley is highlighting that the more superior look down on people as worthless and nothing better to do, and they dont take responsibility for their actions upon others. Priestley uses the technique of cliff-hangers at the end of each scene in order to keep the audience engrossed and full of tension and suspense. At the end of each scene the audience are sitting at the edge of their seats waiting for the curtains to reopen to find out whether or not if the inspector is successful in breaking the faà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ade between him and this family and find out if they will face up to their responsibilities.
